What is the CIMA Level 4 Apprenticeship
The CIMA level 4 apprenticeship is an entry-level professional standard that sets the foundation for your entire accounting career.
- Dual-purpose learning: You gain the globally recognised CIMA certificate in business accounting (cert BA) while simultaneously developing essential workplace competencies.
- Timeline: This journey typically takes 18–24 months of structured learning, ensuring you have ample time to master both the theory and the practice.
Check your eligibility: Who can apply?
Before starting, you need to ensure you meet the core criteria for funding and enrollment:
- Employment status: You must be employed in a relevant financial or accounting role and have your employer’s permission to start.
- Location: You must be living and working in England to qualify for the apprenticeship funding.
- Age & requirements: You must be 16 years or over.
- You cannot have a prior degree in a similar accounting field that overlaps with this curriculum.
What’s involved?
The CIMA level 4 apprenticeship is split into three sections: Your core exams, a simulation of real-world work, and a final professional showcase.
Phase 1: The four objective test exams
These computer-based exams test your foundational knowledge. You can sit them on-demand throughout the year, meaning you move at a pace that suits you.
Phase 2: End-point assessment 1 (EPA1)
The role simulation exam
Think of this as your “final project.” Instead of just testing facts, EPA1 tests how you apply your knowledge to a realistic business scenario.
- The “pre-seen”: A few weeks before the exam, you receive a detailed case study about a fictional company (their history, finances, and current struggles).
- You sit a 3-hour computer-based exam where you are given specific tasks like writing a report or advising a manager based on that company’s situation.
Phase 3: End-point assessment 2 (EPA2)
The professional discussion
This is the final “seal of approval.” It’s not a written exam; it’s a conversation about your growth and the real work you’ve done over the past months.
- Step 1 build your portfolio: Throughout your apprenticeship, you will collect “evidence” of your best moments at work.
- Step 2 the interview: Once you submit your portfolio, you will have a 60-minute interview with an independent assessor from CIMA.
Mastering off-the-job training
One of the best parts of a CIMA level 4 apprenticeship is that you are legally entitled to “off-the-job” training. In simple terms: your employer pays you to learn. Instead of cramming for your CIMA exams late at night or on weekends, a significant portion of your 9-to-5 is dedicated to your professional development.
The OTJ Breakdown
Where can you work?
Completing the Level 4 qualification opens doors across every sector of the economy.
Specific job roles: You will be qualified for roles such as assistant management accountant, junior financial analyst, accounts payable manager, or audit trainee.
The progression bridge: Once finished, you aren’t just an “accounting technician.” You are perfectly positioned to bridge directly into the CIMA professional qualification (level 7), which leads to chartered status.
How much is a CIMA level 4 apprenticeship?
One of the biggest benefits of this route is the financial structure it’s designed to be accessible for everyone.
The zero-cost guarantee: For the student, this is entirely free. You will never pay for your training, study materials, or CIMA exam fees; you are being paid to learn.
Employer & government funding: Most costs are covered by the apprenticeship levy. For smaller employers, the government often covers 95% to 100% of the training costs, making it a highly cost-effective way to upskill.
