What are apprenticeships and how do they work?
Thinking about a career in law but worried about university costs and the lack of guaranteed experience? A legal apprenticeship offers a direct, debt-free route into the profession. Instead of spending years in a lecture hall, you’ll join a real law firm, earn a salary from day one, and study for your professional qualifications alongside your job. Whether you are fresh out of school or looking to switch careers, here is everything you need to know about how they work.
What is an apprenticeship, and how does it work?
An apprenticeship is a real job combined with structured training. You will spend roughly 80% of your time working in a law firm or legal department, gaining practical experience, and 20% of your time studying towards a recognised, professional legal qualification with us. You get the best of both worlds: practical experience and theoretical knowledge.
What will I be paid?
As an employee, you are paid a regular salary from day one! You will earn at least the National Apprentice Minimum Wage, though many modern law firms pay significantly more than this to attract top talent. Plus, you will receive paid holidays and other employee benefits.
How long does it take, and what do I need to get in?
The length depends on the apprenticeship level, but they typically take 18 months to 5 years to complete. Entry requirements vary by program, but generally, you will need GCSEs (including English and Maths) for entry-level apprenticeships, and sometimes A-Levels for the more advanced pathways.
What can I become?

Can I do one if I already have a degree?
Yes, absolutely! You can do an apprenticeship even if you already have a degree, as long as your degree isn’t in the same subject as the apprenticeship. It is a fantastic option for university graduates looking to pivot into the legal sector while earning a salary instead of taking on more student debt.
